We wanted to think about this collaborative project in terms of our different backgrounds: that we have things in common but also these different cultural inheritances. One of the things I’ve inherited is the idea of keeping livestock and I understand why people might want to keep livestock even though it’s hard work and you sometimes wonder why you do it.

One of the things Lisa has in her cultural inheritance from her family is lithography printing – she has an enormous cast iron press with heavy stones – so we were joking that we both have these burdens in a way of really heavy objects but at least hers don’t need feeding!

This quote is from Arthur Young, who was involved in enclosures but started to question whether it was good for everybody; that not everyone was getting something out of the enclosure of land that had previously been common, so he started to doubt the fairness of it all.
